I cannot tell you how excited I am right now. The weather has changed, we are seeing night time lows in the 40's and day time highs in the 70's, maybe an 80 in there, but some rain is on the way too. The water has had sometime to cool. Otter Creek was 75 on Sun @ Belden's but 70 @ 3 Mile. Last nights temps will probably put it into play today(Labor Day) or tomorrow. The tribs are running cold in the mid to low 60's depending on where you take your temp. The bug activity is moving with the light concentration. Shorter days are making some hatches start midday, depending on weather and location. The early evening has produced some great dry fly fishing. I have still seen some Euphrons while doing bass floats on the creek. I suppose one advantage of having poor window screens, and living next to Otter creek is, when a hatch is strong I end up with them in my room. As I sat and tied last night I had a few large Northern Casemaker Caddis buzzing around my light. Break out your favorite caddis larva's, pupa's, and dries, it's sure to be autumn caddis time soon. Fall baetis, is sputtering right now but will be picking up, and expect that there is plenty going on under the surface. If your fishing the any Otter creek trib right now, you should be running very light tippet and/or fluorocarbon. It works! The Brookies will really start getting some color to them as the weather cools, so make sure you take sometime to enjoy that 3wt and your favorite mountain stream.
Just to keep you posted, the NY DEC did a release of water on the Salmon River over the weekend, and will bring it back down on Tuesday. This will certainly bring the salmon that are staging in the bay into the river, there have already been salmon caught as well, but the numbers aren't up yet. DSR has seen some fish. Lower Fly Zone opens the 15th. Your NY license ends on Sept 30th so consider a early season trip. We have some cool patterns for you to try over there.

******IMPORTANT FISHING NEWS******
On May 29 Vermont Governor Jim Douglas signed H.488 into law, banning the use of felt-soled boots and felt waders as of April 1, 2011 in all Vermont waters. The bill says: "It is unlawful to use external felt-soled boots or external felt-soled waders in the waters of Vermont, except that a state or federal employee or emergency personnel, including fire, law enforcement, and EMT personnel, may use external felt-soled boots or external felt-soled waders in the discharge of official duties."
It is our hope here at GMA that this law will help protect our water. Many of our companies stopped producing felt last season. We are currently stocking the Simms Freestone "Clean Stream" boot, though there are plenty of options out there. Help us all protect Vermont's waters and do your part, the sooner you change the better.

Thank You,

The creek is starting to respond to the cooler temperatures. Although on a warm day it climbs over that 70 degree mark. We have seen some morning temps below even a 67, below the NH confluence. This is without a doubt a time to start paying close attention to the creek and it's temps. As soon as it starts to get to that low to mid 60's mark, expect the fishing to become very good for trout. People are still doing very well for bass and more and more Pike are starting to be caught. I really enjoy starting to work more streamers this time of the year on the creek.

The Otter, for the time, will be a great option. We had lots of water get pushed through and cool off the system. This also got the Isonychia's really going too. Flip a rock on Otter Creek, Pulp Mill especially, and you will see the Iso nymphs doing their, hot skillet dance on the underside. The rain also got another wave of Golden Stones to hatch. Keep an eye on the Otter, This small time period of cooler water should be a great time to get into fish, but do keep your thermometer handy. Remember, if you intend to release fish DO NOT fish when the water is warmer then 70, I'll say 69.

I have spent most of my recent time on the Midd fishing for brookies. Very successfully too. Now that the water has cooled, I am looking forward to spending some time below rte 7, working streamers under the log jams. Expect the pockets in East Midd to be great dry fly fishing. Take advantage of the cooler water to fish the areas where we all haven't been able to fish. It won't take long for the water temps to come back up so get out on that water while you can. The Brookies have had some time to grow and offer some fun days on the water up in the mountains.

The New Haven has been a sanctuary for us as the water temps peaked over the last few weeks. Lately we have had great dry fly action all over the Bristol and above areas. We have also run onto a few large fish, over 16" in some pretty small water. I guess the fish, like the fisherman, retreat to the upper reaches when it gets warm. Since the rain, the water came up and the temps went down. I still suggest working a golden stone nymph when the water is up in the pocket freestone water. Otherwise, I like the dry-dropper rig.

The Middlebury river is a good place to beat the summer heat. With the water tumbling down from Ripton, staying cool in the shade of the gorge, the East Middlebury section, which has a nice tree canopy, stays cool fishable. Make sure you do watch the temperature though, by noon you will be in the high 60's. I would not be fishing below Rte 7, until we get some rain. Best time is still early. Fishing with dries is effective but combined with a dropper can be very effective. I will also advocate for the use of flourocarbon here as well.
