Trail Descriptions
(All Directions are from Downtown Middlebury)
Hiking/Snowshoe Trails
Texas Falls - 1.2 Miles Round Trip. Easy
Description:
A self-guiding nature trail follows Hancock Brook .3 miles up to a picnic area. Bear right before the picnic area and follow trail .9 miles back to views of the Falls. Great hike for families.
Directions:
Follow Route 7 South of Middlebury a few miles and turn left onto Route 125 towards East Middlebury. Continue through the 4 way stop and the road will start to climb into the mountains. Continue past the Middlebury Snow Bowl and turn left onto Texas Falls Road and follow road .5 miles to parking area.
Robert Frost Interpretive Trail - 1 Mile Round Trip. Easy
Description:
There are several poems commemorating poet Robert Frost along the trail. The path winds through woods and fields, crossing over a small stream midway through.
Directions:
Follow Route 7 South of Middlebury a few miles and turn left onto Route 125 towards East Middlebury. Continue through the 4 way stop and the road will start to climb into the mountains. A few miles past the Ripton General Store there will be a sign and small parking area on the right.
Lake Pleiad -1.5 Miles Round Trip. Easy
Description:
Trail begins at the top of Middlebury Gap heading South on the Long Trail. As you crisscross the ski slopes of the Middlebury College Snow Bowl there are great views of the Adirondacks. A spur trail off to the right leads to Lake Pleiad.
Directions:
Follow Route 7 South of Middlebury a few miles and turn left onto Route 125 towards East Middlebury. Continue through the 4 way stop and the road will start to climb into the mountains. Park at the top of the gap, just past the entrance to the Snow Bowl.
Worth Mountain - 5.3 Miles Round Trip. Moderate.
Description:
For a longer hike continue on the Long Trail South. Trail will fork, bear left (right would take you to Lake Pleiad) continue climbing to the top of Worth Mountain. Great view of the valley to the East.
Directions:
Same as for Lake Pleiad.
Snake Mountain - 3.5 Miles Round Trip. Moderate
Description:
From trail head follow path until you get to a T. Turn left and trail gets gradually steeper as it winds its way to the top. Look for a trail on the left which brings you out to the top of the cliffs with views of the Adirondacks and Lake Champlain.
Directions:
Route 125 West to Route 22A. Turn right and continue 4 -5 miles. Turn right onto Wilmarth Road. This road runs into Mountain Street. Turn left, trail head will be on your right, parking lot is a little further on your left. Watch out for mountain bikers and mosquitoes.
Mount Abraham - 5.2 Miles Round Trip. Difficult
Description:
A wonderful hike on the Long Trail heading north from the top of Lincoln Gap. The trail is easy to follow, passing the Battell Shelter and continuing to the 4,006 foot summit. Boasting a 360 degree view from the top, Mt. Abraham offers one of the best views in all of Vermont.
Directions:
Route 7 North about 4 miles. Turn right onto Route 17 East towards Bristol. About a mile past the town of Bristol turn right onto Lincoln Road. Continue past the Lincoln General Store and straight to the top of Lincoln Gap. Parking at the top on the left or right.
Notes: Lincoln Gap Road is closed in the winter. Great swimming on the New Haven River along Lincoln Road. Stop by the General Store in Lincoln for sandwiches and drinks.

Beldens Falls
Description:
This is a very productive section of the Otter Creek. Fish for Rainbows, Browns and Small Mouth Bass under the bridge or in the riffles heading into the gorge.
Directions:
Take Route 7 North past the Sugarhouse Motel and turn Left onto Beldens Falls Road.. Parking lot is just beyond the railroad tracks.
Lewis Creek
Description:
Fish for Steelhead and Rainbows below the falls (near parking area) and downstream to Route 7.
Directions:
Follow Route 7 North into the town of North Ferrisburgh. Turn right onto Old Hollow Road (across from the Mobile Station). Drive for about a mile, parking is on the right side of road, just beyond the bridge.
New Haven Mills
Description:
The New Haven River flows from its headwaters in Lincoln to where it joins the Otter Creek a few miles North of Middlebury. You'll find browns and rainbows in the pocket water and pools all along River Road.
Directions:
Take Route 7 North past the Sugarhouse Motel and turn right onto River Road. For the next few miles you will wind along the New Haven with plenty of pull-offs for parking. The old remains of the Mills are where River Road. meets Munger Street.
Otter Creek
Description:
Fish for Rainbows, Browns and Small Mouth Bass above and below the falls in Middlebury.
Directions:
Mill Street, Downtown Middlebury. Be sure to stop into Middlebury Mountaineer for all of your angling needs.
Paddling
Winona Lake -Flat water
Description:
This small but beautiful lake is located at the foothills of the Hogsback Mountain Range. From the boat launch paddle through marshy waters before it opens into the Lake.
Directions:
Take Route 7 North 3-4 miles. Turn right onto Route 17. At 4 way intersection turn left onto Burpee Rd. After a mile or two, this will merge into Monkton Road, continue straight. Across from Corkins Tire Company turn right onto the dirt road with the wildlife viewing sign.
Lake Dunmore- Flat water
Description:
A beautiful Lake at the foothills of the Green Mountains. The small island in the middle is a great place to stop and have a picnic. Branbury State Park is on the East side of the lake.
Directions:
Follow Route 7 South from Middlebury. 4-5 miles outside of town turn left onto Lake Dunmore Road (Route 53). Bear right at fork in road onto West Shore Road, parking lot and boat launch will be 1.5 miles on the left (after waterhouses).
Dead Creek – Slow moving water
Description:
This creek offers nice flat water paddling, with great wildlife viewing.
Directions:
Take Route 7 North 3-4 miles. Turn left onto Route 17. Cross Route 22, continuing straight on 17 and parking area will be a few miles down on the right.
Lower New Haven River- Moving water
Description:
Follow this beautiful section of the New Haven River as it winds past farms and the remains of an old Mill. There are a few short class II rapids (not appropriate for first time paddlers ). Put in right below the one lane bridge on Route 116. Take out at the second bridge (approximately 4 miles down stream) across from the Nash Farm.
Directions:
Take Route 7 North past the Sugarhouse Motel and turn right onto River Road. Continue for a few miles until it runs into Route 116. Turn right onto 116 and bear right into the parking lot before the one lane bridge.
Note: The water levels on the New Haven River are very weather dependent, by mid summer there are many spots where it's only ankle deep. You'll want to scout the river from the road to see how conditions are. Be careful of downed trees and debris left over from the floods a few years ago. You will need two cars, one at the put in and the other when you take out.
Swimming Holes
Bartlett Falls- Lincoln
Description:
This section of the New Haven River has some of the best swimming holes in the county. You can tan on the rocks around the falls or scramble over the rocks and get under the main waterfall.
Directions:
Follow Route 7 North about 4 miles. Turn right onto Route 17 East towards Bristol. Approximately 1 mile past the town of Bristol turn right onto Lincoln Road. Bartlett Falls is the second pull-off on the right.
