The state has made its annual visit to the New Haven with a total of 1,500 rainbows. Expect crowds this weekend at the key locations. But on the good side, water temps have come up quite a bit, with a 61 on Thursday night at dog team. The wild and hold over trout will certainly be feeding. I saw a pretty sizable Hendrickson hatch last night, with sulphers and caddis mixed in. You might have your first shot at a dry fly fish this weekend. Try working the middle of the water column with emergers.
Lots of water, but its is shrinking for the moment. Jen Goodale, Our OCC3 Champ, Reported rising fish at DT last evening, and with todays weather, I'm sure a repeat hatch will take place this evening. As far as I know, it has NOT been stocked. So those are hold overs or wild fish eating. Get out and enjoy those fish! As the water warms the fishing will improve further and further up the watershed.
The New Haven River is Closed until April 9th, 2011
The water on the New Haven is in great shape. Clear, cold and running just a bit high. It is late fall and the drift menu for trout is limited. BWO's, caddis pupa, and midge larva will be your best choices. We are still getting some occasional action on golden nymphs, and even some dries. Working streamers can very productive this time of year as well. Get out and fish you favorite sections as much as you can because there is only 3 weeks left on the New Haven!
Water is going to be high for a bit, but with some luck it will be come clear. The fish over the last few days have still be sitting in the faster water, but they are eating Stonefly nymphs and other larger bugs that have been washed into the column from the flooding. It won't be long, based on weather till, they begin to focus back on the emerging bugs. They are still willing to take streamers too.
