I have actually heard about some tougher days on the Midd recently. Normally productive water has slowed. Might be all the sediment from the construction on 125. It is running very clear right now, so be stealthy. Same game, light tippets, small flies. You will find better action in lower light, morning and evening, based on the spooking factor of the fish in the Midd. Upper should fish well with dries all day. The lower Midd can be a wild place in the Fall, with shots at some monster browns. Move slow and be observant.

The Midd is low and clear. But on a recent guide trip the river became chalky with the sediment from the 125 construction. This made the river impossible to fish. Several other folks have witnessed the same event. If you are there and see this happen, please call VT F&W water quality department, so they can be informed of the frequency of these incidents. Otherwise we have had some great fun fishing dry-droppers in the pockets. The water pumping down the mountain has started to cool, so look for the area below Rte 7 to start fishing well. This is a great spot for streamers.

I have spent most of my recent time on the Midd fishing for brookies. Very successfully too. Now that the water has cooled, I am looking forward to spending some time below rte 7, working streamers under the log jams. Expect the pockets in East Midd to be great dry fly fishing. Take advantage of the cooler water to fish the areas where we all haven't been able to fish. It won't take long for the water temps to come back up so get out on that water while you can. The Brookies have had some time to grow and offer some fun days on the water up in the mountains.

The Middlebury river is a good place to beat the summer heat. With the water tumbling down from Ripton, staying cool in the shade of the gorge, the East Middlebury section, which has a nice tree canopy, stays cool fishable. Make sure you do watch the temperature though, by noon you will be in the high 60's. I would not be fishing below Rte 7, until we get some rain. Best time is still early. Fishing with dries is effective but combined with a dropper can be very effective. I will also advocate for the use of flourocarbon here as well.

I hope you had the opportunity to fish the off colored water this weekend. Brian was out on Saturday and had a great day, caught several fish, one over 20 inches. When the Midd is high it fishes very well. All the action was underneath. Some on Nymphs and some on streamers. Goldens continue to be very active on all Addison county water, where they are applicable. Wherever they are the trout are too. I would expect the water to back to low and clear by Monday. Then you'll be back to clear water tactics smaller flies and lighter tippets.
