The Middlebury River is closed for the season. The Middlebury River will reopen on April 14th, 2012.
The fishing on the Midd is pretty technical right now. Withe the low clear water, make sure to take care approaching the water. I saw a 18 plus inch Brown in about 18 inches of water yesterday. I watched him for a bit, but as I slipped moving closer it spooked. I would say throughout the weekend, to use lighter tippets or fluorocarbon tippet with the current water conditions. If fishing streamers, tone it down just a bit, with either smaller sizes or natural colors, or both. Lake longer casts and be strategical about where you will stand, who your presenting the flies.
The Midd has been a bit tricky as of late. Mainly related to the fact they they have done some large scale "construction" to the river in East Middlebury. It has caused some of the water downstream to be pretty dark. But I believe the work has stopped so most of the river is fishable. I personally pricked a few large fish in the lower portion of the river last week. Which can be a good option. Ripton is fishing well for brookies and small rainbows, Those fish will still eat a dry.
The Midd is recovering form a big rainstorm, but has just about completely cleaned up. Its running a touch higher, but that is a good thing. In the off color water its smart to run larger nymphs and bright streamers. But as soon as it come back to clear, you will want to downsize everything.(Tippet and Fly size) You will also have to step up your "stealth" game, as they can see you coming. You might see some stray Isonichia and/or White Flys buzzing around. I have also seen some impressive flying ant hatches this time of the year.
